Lite-On SOHD-167T DVD-ROM Drive
Strengths: Price, Read DVDs at 16X and CDs at 48X or 52X, ability to set region code
Weakness: noisy when spinning at full speed
There aren't much differences between DVD-ROM drives, they all read DVDs at 16X and CDs at 48X or 52X so I bought this one for my home theater PC based on its ability to change its region codes easily by available software. I purchase lots of DVD's from different regions (UK, Asia and Australia so this ability was very important to me. It works great, and has yet to give me any problems.

The LiteOn SOHD-167T DVD-ROM reader offers 16X DVD-ROM maximum read speed and 48X max. read speed for CD-ROMs. With the CD reading tests, the drive showed good performance with good seek times and very fast DVD video ripping speed. It didn't have problems reading DVD-R/RW & DVD+R/RW media and with an un-official firmware, can read up to 16X.
The CD error correction results were good, but with test discs having large scratches, the drive did not produce good results exhibiting high error rates. In the DVD error correction tests, it managed to playback all of our test discs without reporting any read errors or problems.
The drive offers fast ripping times only with PSX, whereas with the SecuROM and especially with SafeDisc v2, it reported slow ripping times.
According to the DAE tests, the drive returned good performance only with the CDS200 protection scheme but with some timing problems and unsuccessful read&test CRC comparisons for most of the tracks. With the Key2Audio protection scheme, the CD was unreadable under Windows XP OS. The drive managed to play 90 & 99 minute AudioCDs. The LiteOn 167T is fast with the CDR audio test disc, resulting in high quality performance for audio extraction.

TopLite-On 16x DVD, 48x CD
Strengths: inexpensive and reliable
Weakness: slightly noisy
Great DVD drive to aid in copying information from disc to disc. The LiteOn 16xDVD EIDE Drive is inexpensive and runs well.
With all these DVD drives you will get some noise at full speed but it's really note that that bad.
This product has worked well for me and has given me no problems.

Lite On DVD player - great choice
Strengths: Great value for the money and always reliable.
Weakness: somewhat loud at high speeds
Lite-on makes great CD and DVD players for the money. This DVD player is slightly loud when reading at high speeds but certainly tolerable.
DVD-ROM reads CD's at 48x rather than 52x from dedicated CD drives. Since most graphic intense games come on DVD now (rather than CD) I see no weakness with the 8% speed difference anymore.
